The appointment

An appointment for an independent medical assessment can be arranged by your insurer, employer, lawyer or treating doctor. The assessment may take place at mlcoa consulting suites, or in a specialist’s own consulting rooms.

Independent medical assessments:

  • Usually take up to an hour
For people with complex medical histories, multiple conditions or neuropsychological conditions, the assessment may take longer (you will be advised if this is the case). As with any important appointment, please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time.
  • Include an interview and a medical history
You will be asked about your medical and work history, accident or illness circumstances, your treatment and how the injury or condition affects you. The questions may be wide-ranging and not just about the body part that has been injured or is ill.
  • Will include a physical examination, for physical conditions
The specialist will examine the injured parts of your body and possibly other parts of your body as well. The assessment may involve measuring height and weight and the movement of various joints and reflexes.
  • Will include an examination of relevant medical records
This may include an examination of your x-rays, imaging studies and other test results, as applicable to the assessment.
