WPI Assessments and Evidence-Based Medicine

mlcoa Tasmania hosted a lunchtime presentation titled Whole Person Impairment Assessments and Evidence-Based Medicine led by Dr Dwight Dowda, Occupational Physician at the Best Western Hobart on 14 November 2017.

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) was discussed first and it’s integration into mlcoa reports by utilising the Official Disability Guideline (ODG) tool. A case example was used to illustrate EBM in practice and attendees were provided with an example of ODG being referenced in a report. Dr Dowda then moved on to discuss whole person impairment assessments and gave a brief historical overview including impairment evaluation in Australia. Dr Dowda talked about the steps in an impairment rating and demonstrated how he would do this by using a goniometer to measure an audience member’s wrist and then had the attendees work through the case study with the handouts provided.

Positive feedback was given at the end of this event by attendees, with comments such as:

“Dr Dowda’s presentation was interesting, especially WPI.”

“Relating information to case examples was excellent, reinforced the learning opportunity, and made it easy to understand.”
