The Consequences of Medication Use
On Friday, 18th May mlcoa SA and Dr Chris Alderman, Pharmacist presented “The Consequences of Medication Use”. Dr Alderman detailed the history of medicines from prehistoric to today, quoting an interesting statement from Paracelsus who was a Swiss physician and alchemist during the 1500, “All things are poisons, for there is nothing without poisonous qualities. It is only the dose which makes a thing poison”.
Dr Alderman spoke about a variety of topics including how not all medicines are prescription medicines or have scientific proof to back them; all medicines have side effects; most medicines interact with other medicines; medicines influence the person and the person influences the medicine; people don’t necessarily take medicines as they are intended to be taken; and how some people become confused about medicines.
Dr Alderman also spoke about adherence, complementary medicines, adverse drug reactions and interactions, medication error, and drug addiction and dependence.
