Celebrate spring with mlcoa

Welcome to our September bulletin.

Mlcoa wishes to thank everyone for their ongoing support of our educational events both Brisbane and regional QLD.

Mlcoa is proud to announce some new members to our team: Dr Clare Wood Occupational Physician available in Brisbane and in regional QLD – (Cairns, Gladstone, Nambour, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Nambour, Mackay and Brisbane). We also welcome Ms Anne White Occupational Therapist available fortnightly in Cairns regional QLD for assessments and Brisbane. Anne is available to travel nationally upon request. Please join mlcoa in welcoming these specialist to our team.

Regional Tool Box Talk -Shoulder Series: Back Pain and Litigation

Presenter: Dr Simon Journeaux, Orthopaedic Surgeon

You are invited to a presentation by Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Simon Journeaux. During the presentation, Dr Journeaux will discuss:

  • How can the claims manager/ solicitor understand back pain when the subject confuses the medical profession?
  • Two Doctors will reach opposing views on pathology, causation, functional incapacity and Prognosis when examining the same patient. The problem is compounded when the medical Terminology is not understood by the person managing the claim.
  • This presentation will discuss and explain spinal terminology and introduce to Those (non-medical) who deal with such cases the:

                > Pathologies

                > Examinations

                > Investigations

                > Treatment of common spinal problems

Regional Toolbox Talk entitled: Concussion and it Consequences (PCS)

Presenter: Dr Alistair (Sandy) Macleod, Psychiatrist

Please join us as we discuss the complex disorder in which varying symptomology presents itself in regards to “Concussion and Its Consequences”.

Concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is a common injury in sport (rugby, football, boxing and cycling), warfare (blast injuries), on the roads, and the most common causes of concussion are falls (especially from a height).

Post-concussion symptoms comprise of combinations of organic and psychological influences and in in most cases the symptoms resolve spontaneously and rapidly. Rarely do they become chronic. If so, they raise complex Medico-Legal conundrums that we will explore during this session!

Navigating the Maze of Depression – Dr Curt Gray Psychiatrist

This presentation will look at modern diagnostic concepts of ‘depression’ and how to understand when it is a clinical syndrome as opposed to normal reaction. The range of depression diagnosis will be covered including: Major Depressive Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Dysthymic Disorder (Persistent Depressive Disorder) and other depressive entities.

The presentation will also cover further points such as:

                        * Why depressive disorders lead to functional impairment.

                        * Whether such impairments may be confined or pervasive.
