Mental Health Event 1 – Anxiety & Depression
“Understanding Anxiety and Depression” was the first of four weekly Mental Health Events mlcoa VIC have organised for October 2016’s Mental Health Month, in keeping with our theme of Educate and Grow.
The Educate and Grow message aims, through mlcoa educational events, to reduce stigma around mental health in the workplace. By increasing mental health literacy, we can assist in the management of workers from a compensation claim or fitness for duty/work perspective.
Dr Erin Redmond used her extensive experience to lead an insightful presentation. She outlined the general features of anxiety and depression, explained when a mental health condition is considered a disorder vs distress, and went into detail about what kind of treatment options are available to be prescribed by a relevant healthcare professional.
Dr Redmond shared with the audience that depression is a major cause of middle aged death/disability and that the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that by 2020 Depression will be the 2nd leading health burden worldwide.
The feedback from this session was well received with comments such as; “Very interesting and helpful to understand more about mental health conditions we see in the workplace”, “Very interesting session, could go for another hour” and “Great presentation”.
Mental Health Event 2 “Ruminative Embitterment” will be presented by Dr Peter Farnbach on Tuesday 11th October. Please call (03) 9650 2000 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
